Midnight Orchard

TRANQUIL • LUMINOUS • ROOTED

Stories from the studio, reflections on process, and the art of the handmade.

Blackberry Mostarda

Some recipes are carefully planned. Others begin with an unexpected harvest and a bit of curiosity.

For years I have loved making fruit preserves, chutneys, and small-batch jams. There is something deeply satisfying about capturing a season in a jar and knowing that months later you can open it and taste a little piece of summer. This year, however, my garden had other plans.

A few years ago I intentionally planted several blackberry bushes with great anticipation. They struggled through our northern Idaho winters and eventually seemed to disappear altogether. I assumed they simply weren't suited to our climate and moved on.

Then something unexpected happened.

This summer tiny blackberry shoots began appearing throughout the garden—nestled among the strawberries, weaving between raspberry canes, and establishing themselves where I least expected them. Every time I spotted another one I couldn't help but laugh.

"Where have you been all my life?"

One by one they grew stronger, producing an astonishing harvest of beautiful, glossy berries. Suddenly I found myself with bowls overflowing with blackberries and a desire to create something a little different than the jams and preserves I had made before.

That curiosity sent me down the most delightful rabbit hole.

What Is Blackberry Mostarda?

Mostarda is a traditional Italian fruit condiment that beautifully blurs the line between sweet, savory, and spicy.

Unlike a traditional jam or chutney, mostarda combines fresh fruit with mustard, vinegar, and aromatic herbs to create something entirely its own. The sweetness of the fruit is balanced by bright acidity, while whole mustard seeds lend a gentle warmth that is wonderfully unexpected.

The result is a preserve that is bold, vibrant, and layered with flavor, equally at home on a cheese board, beside roasted meats, or spread onto a simple slice of crusty bread.

Why You'll Love It

Midnight Orchard brings together seasonal, sweet blackberries, fragrant orange zest, honey, whole mustard seeds, black pepper, and fresh thyme. Every spoonful offers a beautiful balance of sweet, tangy, savory, and just a hint of gentle spice.

I especially love serving it with:

  • Brie, Camembert, or aged cheddar

  • Roast pork or grilled chicken

  • Crostini with goat cheese

  • Charcuterie boards

  • Sandwiches and panini

  • Sharp cheeses and rustic breads

It is one of those pantry staples that instantly makes an ordinary meal feel a little more special.

From the Studio Pantry

One of my favorite things about building the Studio Pantry is discovering ingredients that elegantly transform everyday cooking into something memorable.

Like Green Gold, and the other pantry staples in this collection, Midnight Orchard isn't meant to be the center of the meal.

Instead, it becomes another color on your creative palette, ready to elevate a simple sandwich, brighten a cheese board, or add an unexpected layer of flavor to dinner.

Having a few handcrafted pantry staples on the shelf means wonderful meals often come together with very little effort.

Studio Notes

This mostarda becomes even better after resting overnight in the refrigerator. As the flavors mingle, the honey softens the acidity while the mustard and thyme become beautifully balanced.

For the fullest flavor, allow the mostarda to come to room temperature before serving. The fruit becomes more expressive, the citrus brightens, and every ingredient has a chance to shine.

It is one of those recipes that rewards a little patience.

New to the Studio Kitchen?

If this is your first visit, I invite you to begin with Welcome to the Studio Kitchen, where I share the philosophy behind these seasonal recipes, pantry staples, and stories from the garden.

It's the place where this collection begins.

This is where I'll preserve not only the harvest, but the recipes and stories that accompany it.

From the Studio

The Studio Kitchen grew from a simple idea, that creativity doesn't end at the studio door.

Sometimes it takes shape in handmade books, collage, and paper. Other times it begins in the garden, continues at the kitchen table, and ends with a recipe shared among family and friends.

Whether you've arrived here through my artwork, the Studio Kitchen, or simply a love of thoughtful making, I'm so glad you're here.

Thank you for spending a little time with me today.
