It is hard to believe June is almost over! I have been busy in my studio working on my series. I completed piecing my "Winter Piece" that I spoke about in my last post. All that is left is to apply the surface stitching and sew on the facing. This piece ended up measuring 40"x26".
I am anxious to see this piece complete because I know that the stitching will really transform the surface and add another dimension. To stay on task though, that will have to wait until later this fall as planned.
My main focus on this piece was to control the negative space visually. I think I accomplished what I wanted to do. It will be nice to pick this work back up in a couple of months and finish it.
On another note, as the title of this post suggests, I have been thinking a lot about my series and defining it on a lot of different levels. One of the things that I keep coming back to is the name, "Vineyards". I am not crazy about the name and since the work is so new I want to come up with something that resonates with me. If I am going to rename my series, now is the time to do it.
Word searches and flipping through industry brochures and books looking for the perfect name has kept me busy. In conclusion, it is not as easy as I thought it was going to be! I decided to jot down ideas, words, phrases, etc. and give myself some breathing room and time. There really isn't a looming deadline but I would like to shoot for having a new name selected by the end of the year. If anyone has a suggestion or a thought, shoot it over to me in the comments section, collaboration is much appreciated!
As July approaches, I have a goal for this month to try a new idea with my series that I hope will allow me to manipulate the color and scale of my stakes in a new way visually. Sometimes when I get a new inspiration, things magically go together beautifully and I am pleased with the outcome. This idea however, is really pushing me to continue to refine it and make edits as I move forward.
The color palette continues to evolve even as I write this post. I have sewn pieces together and taken them apart. I have worked for several hours, walked away and have come back with a new approach or have solved a problem that only time away allows. I think I am getting closer though and just have to trust my gut that I have to continue in order to see this idea through.
Working in new territory can sometimes feel a little uncomfortable. What if things don't come together like I hope they will? I don't have a road map for this piece or a sketch as most of my ideas are in my head working intuitively and design as I go.
One thing I do have is an idea; so I shall plant that seed, water it, and let it grow..... letting my design evolve and lead me where I need to go. Yes, these days are uncharted with how things will unfold but I will continue on and solve one challenge at a time.
Though you can't tell a lot about what this piece is going to look like when it is finished, these are pictures of where it is today, scattered in my studio in lots of little pieces! I wanted to share with you what I am working on and show you work in progress. I hope to have a chunk of it on my design wall in a couple of weeks and will share more with you then.
Until then, hope your summer is going well! See you back here in a few.....
