This summer in the Pacific Northwest has been unseasonably warm! It is mid July and the number of days that it has been over 90 degrees is now in the double digits. One thing I love about the NW is the seasonality that we have including the mild temperatures in the summer months / normally. But this summer is anything but normal! Yes we do have a handful of warm days but nothing like we have experienced this summer.
After reviewing all my weather apps on my phone, it looks like this weekend is the final hurrah for a few weeks of temperatures in the 90’s…. yippee! I will take the 80 degree weather any day! Working in an air conditioned studio seemed like a good plan for the next couple of days. I contemplated what I wanted to work on… did I want to play with some smaller improvisational pieces like pillow tops? How about some color studies? My Crush series kept tugging at me and said, “pick me, pick me!” How could I say no?
This has been such an interesting series for me on many levels. My inspiration for each piece so far has been different for each one. Often there is some design aspect that I discover in the current piece that I am working on that will prompt me to experiment or think about in the next piece. Crush 4 introduced some strong value changes within the composition. I keep asking myself questions as I think about Crush 5..... what would happen if I did this, or what would happen if I did that regarding strong contrast changes in value on a larger scale? What would it look like if I pushed value around in concentrated areas on the piece? How will the color and values move across the composition?
I “kind of sort of” have an idea of what I would like to pursue next but the design for Crush 5 is still a little fuzzy. This morning I started pulling a neutral palette of fabrics. I really wasn’t sure what the direction would be but as I pulled things and auditioned different colors and patterns, a range of lights and darks from my stash started to take shape. Neutrals are always a little tricky as there are so many undertones of warm and cool colors. There is a little bit of both right now in my selection but I think it is safe to say that the warmer tones will probably be dominate.
The first 4 pieces in my series have included a lot of saturated colors. This piece I thought it might be fun to experiment with neutrals and add just a “tiny bit” of color somewhere. What color should it be? I previewed several choices and nothing really grabbed me. Then, I added a couple pieces of hot pink and my heart melted. If you can’t tell by now I LOVE hot pink! I like to treat my favorite color as a neutral. It can work with SO many things that I pull color wise. It is pure joy for me to find a place for my special friend.
How much pink and where will it go I have no idea right now. With all my Crush pieces often times the hardest part is just getting started. I will spend several days just making parts and putting them up on my design wall.
Here is what I created this morning to see if I liked the direction of the lighter neutrals I had pulled.
I think this is going to be a fun piece to create and as I continue to make more parts and play on my design wall. I think that Crush 5 will be a nice contrast to the previous pieces in the series… stay tuned!
Hope you all are enjoying your summer.... :)
